Get ready

5 minutes. Choose three unbreakable objects and a clear floor or low table.

What you’ll need

Paper, crayons and three large, safe household objects, such as a wooden spoon, a clean sock and a plastic bowl.

Let’s play

1. Ask your child to choose a museum theme: tiny giants, a sleepy castle or objects from the future.

2. Place each object in the display and invent what it might have been used for.

3. Draw a label together. Your child can dictate the words or draw a picture.

4. Become the curious visitor. Ask one question at each display, then trade jobs and create a new exhibit.

Your part in the adventure

Be a wonderfully curious visitor. Accept imaginative answers rather than correcting the story.

What they’re discovering

Describing an object, grouping it with others and inventing its history builds vocabulary and shows them that one thing can have more than one story.

Before you begin

You pick the objects. Skip anything glass, valuable, battery powered or small enough to swallow, and set the museum somewhere nobody will trip on it.

Keep the idea going

Add a ‘please touch’ display with two big fabric items and describe how they feel. Ages 6 to 8 can write the labels and give a guided tour. If the museum gets quiet, announce a surprise new exhibit and let them choose it.

Every child is different. Adjust activities for their age and abilities, and stay close by. These are play ideas, not medical or developmental advice.
