Saving versus investing

  1. Saving usually means putting money somewhere safe and easy to reach, like a bank savings account.
  2. Investing means buying something, such as shares of a company, with the hope that it grows in value or pays income over time.
  3. Savings at insured banks are generally protected up to legal limits. Investments are not insured against losing value.

In plain words: Saving protects money. Investing puts money at risk with the hope of growth.

Risk and return

  1. Return is what an investment earns or loses.
  2. Risk is the chance that the result is different from what you expected, including losing money.
  3. In general, investments with the potential for higher returns also carry higher risk.
  4. Time horizon means how long until the money is needed. Risk tolerance means how much ups and downs a person can handle.

In plain words: No investment offers high return with no risk. Anyone claiming that is a warning sign.
