Día de los Muertos

Families build ofrendas to remember loved ones.

PAPITO+ · See the day plan

A Mexican tradition, now celebrated across the Americas, where families remember loved ones who have died with color, food and joy, not sadness.

Before

  • Choose who your family will remember. Gather a photo and a favorite food or object of theirs.
  • Make papel picado or paper marigolds together.

On the day

  • Build an ofrenda with photos, candles, cempasúchil marigolds, water, bread and the person’s favorite things.
  • Share stories about the people you’re remembering.
  • Enjoy pan de muerto together.

Money moment

Give your kid a small budget for the ofrenda and let them help buy flowers and bread, comparing prices.

Dad move

Tell a story about someone your kids never got to meet. For young kids, this can be a gentle first conversation about death: keep it simple and let them ask questions.

  • Clean and decorate the house together. It’s a fresh-start tradition.
  • Make diyas, small lamps, from air-dry clay or paper.

On the day

  • Draw a rangoli at the door with colored chalk, rice or sand.
  • Light diyas or LED candles at dusk.
  • Share sweets with neighbors and friends.

Money moment

Some communities start new account books at Diwali. Help your kid set a savings goal for the year and track it on paper.

  • Grab a small piñata, or make one from a paper bag and streamers.

On the day

Hanukkah

Begins at sundown

PAPITO+ · See the day plan

The eight-night Jewish Festival of Lights remembers the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem and a small jar of oil that lasted eight nights.

Before

  • Get a menorah (hanukkiah) and candles for eight nights.
  • Pick up a dreidel and chocolate gelt.

On the day

  • Light the candles after sundown, adding one each night.
  • Play dreidel: nun, nothing; gimel, take all; hei, take half; shin, put one in.
  • Make latkes together. Frying is a grown-up job.

Money moment

Gelt began as real coins. One night, give a few real coins and split them into saving, spending and giving (tzedakah).

Dad move

Let a different kid choose each night’s activity.

Three Kings Day

In many homes, kids leave grass for the camels the night before.

PAPITO+ · See the day plan

Celebrated in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Spain and across Latin America, it remembers the three kings who brought gifts to baby Jesus.

Before

  • On January 5, kids write a letter to the Kings.
  • Fill a shoebox with grass or hay for the camels and leave it by the bed or the door.

On the day

  • Open small gifts in the morning.
  • Share a rosca de reyes. In Mexico, whoever finds the baby figure hosts tamales on Día de la Candelaria, February 2.
  • With little ones, use a large figure or skip it: small figures are a choking hazard.

Money moment

While they write the letter, talk about wants and needs: one thing for themselves and one for someone else.

Dad move

Read the letters together the night before and keep them in a box. Years later, it’s a time capsule.

Lunar New Year

PAPITO+ · See the day plan

Celebrated by Chinese, Vietnamese (Tết), Korean (Seollal) and other families, it welcomes the new year on the lunar calendar with family, food and wishes for good luck.

Before

  • Clean the house together before the day. In Chinese tradition, sweeping on New Year’s Day is said to sweep away luck.
  • Decorate with red: paper lanterns, paper cutouts and anything bright.

On the day

  • Make dumplings together. Kids are great at folding.
  • Share a big family meal, ideally with grandparents.
  • Look up which zodiac animal the new year belongs to, then find each family member’s.

Money moment

Kids often receive money as a gift: red envelopes (hongbao in Chinese, lì xì in Vietnamese) or sebaetdon in Korea. Help them save part of it toward a goal they choose.

Dad move

Tell each kid one wish you have for them this year, and ask for theirs.

Eid al-Fitr

Expected date; depends on the moon sighting

PAPITO+ · See the day plan

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. Families pray, dress up, visit and share sweets.

Before

  • Lay out new or special clothes the night before.
  • Bake a tray of ma’amoul or another sweet to share.

On the day

  • Greet people with “Eid Mubarak” (Blessed Eid).
  • Visit family and friends.
  • Kids often receive eidi, small gifts of money.

Money moment

Split eidi into spend, save and give jars. Zakat al-Fitr, charity given before the Eid prayer, is a natural way to talk about giving.

Dad move

Take a family photo in your Eid clothes every year and line them up.

PAPITO+ · See the day plan

Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, honors the prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham’s) faith and falls during the Hajj pilgrimage. Families pray, share a festive meal and give food to people in need.

Before

  • Ask your kid to help choose and cook one dish for the family meal.
  • Set aside containers or bags to share food with neighbors and people in need.

On the day

  • Greet people with “Eid Mubarak.”
  • Share a festive meal with family and friends.
  • Many families divide food into thirds: for the family, for friends and neighbors, and for those in need. Deliver some together.

Money moment

Pick a cause together and let your kid add some of their own money to the family’s donation. Talk about why giving matters even when it’s small.

Dad move

Let your kid be the one who hands the food to a neighbor, then talk on the walk home about how it felt.
