Get ready

10 minutes. Set out six small samples in numbered cups while your kid isn’t looking.

What you’ll need

A scarf or sleep mask, small cups or spoons, and six foods from your kitchen, like apple, cucumber, cheese, pickle, cereal and honey.

Let’s play

1. Blindfold the taster and hand them sample one.

2. They guess the food and rate how sure they are from 1 to 5.

3. Write down every guess, then move to the next sample.

4. Swap roles. Your kid sets up six foods for you.

5. Compare scores and talk about which foods fooled you.

Your part in the adventure

Set up a fair challenge, then be a good sport when it’s your turn.

What they’re discovering

They’re paying attention to their senses and learning how smell and texture shape taste.

Before you begin

Check for allergies first. Use soft, bite-size pieces and nothing hot.

Keep the idea going

Ages 8 to 10 can taste with a hint category. Ages 12 to 15 can try holding their nose to see how much smell matters.

Every child is different. Adjust activities for their age and abilities, and stay close by. These are play ideas, not medical or developmental advice.
