Get ready
3 minutes. Find a flat paved spot away from the street, like a driveway or patio, and grab sidewalk chalk.
What you’ll need
Sidewalk chalk, water to drink. Optional: a timer on your phone.
Let’s play
1. Draw a start line. Then take turns adding a section: a wavy line to walk, circles to hop into, a spiral to spin in, a zigzag to tiptoe.
2. Add instructions with pictures. A frog means jump, a star means spin, a foot means hop on one leg.
3. Walk it through slowly once together.
4. Now run it. Cheer, time it if you like, and try again to beat your own time.
5. Let your kid add one new tricky section and test you on it.
Your part in the adventure
Draw the hard parts, demonstrate with full commitment and get the spin section hilariously wrong.
What they’re discovering
They’re planning a sequence, reading symbols, and practicing balance, hopping and body control.
Before you begin
Keep the course on your own driveway or patio, well back from the street and cars. Check the pavement isn’t scorching. Water and shade breaks on hot days.
Keep the idea going
Younger kids can do a three section course with big circles. Ages 6 to 8 can design a course for you with a secret rule. If it’s too hot, rinse the chalk and come back after dinner when it’s cooler.
