Get ready
2 minutes. Find a shady place outdoors with a clear view of the sky, and sit comfortably together.
What you’ll need
No supplies required. Optional: a towel or blanket for sitting, plus drinking water and sun protection.
Let’s play
1. Find a comfortable shaded spot outdoors with a view of the sky. Do not look toward the sun. If there are no clouds, use the outline of a tree or the landscape instead.
2. Invite your child to choose one shape: an animal, castle, spaceship or anything they imagine. Their interpretation starts the story.
3. Ask, “Where is it going?” Add one sentence, then let your child choose what happens next.
4. Look for a second shape and ask how the characters meet. Make gentle sound effects or funny voices together.
5. Give the story a title and ending. Later, invite your child to retell their favorite part.
Your part in the adventure
Follow your child's ideas rather than correcting shapes. Introduce one interesting story problem and allow them to resolve it.
What they’re discovering
Your kid is practicing turning what they see into a story, waiting for their turn and noticing how the sky changes while you talk.
Before you begin
Find shade and never look straight at the sun. Bring water, and skip it when it’s stormy or the heat is heavy. Pick a spot away from roads and water.
Keep the idea going
Older kids can tell it in three acts: a beginning, a surprise and an ending. Younger kids can just name the shapes and act them out with their bodies. If the clouds aren’t cooperating, use treetops, rooftops or the shapes in the grass.
Every child is different. Adjust activities for their age and abilities, and stay close by. These are play ideas, not medical or developmental advice.
