Get ready
1 minute. Choose one safe room and agree to walk, point and leave objects where they are.
What you’ll need
No supplies required. Optional: paper and crayons for a color record.
Let’s play
1. Pick a color and become detectives. Ask your child to point to three things that match it.
2. Compare two discoveries. Are they exactly the same shade, or a little different?
3. Let your child give you the next color clue. Think aloud as you search.
4. Finish by inventing a name for a newly spotted color, such as “sleepy ocean blue.”
Your part in the adventure
Be the detective who occasionally needs a clue, giving your child a chance to lead.
What they’re discovering
Close looking, comparing shades and naming colors help them notice detail and explain why they picked what they picked.
Before you begin
Stick to one room you’ve checked. Walk, don’t run, and leave cupboards and furniture alone.
Keep the idea going
Try it sitting down, using only what you can see from one spot. Ages 6 to 8 can rank three finds from lightest to darkest. If they lose steam, hunt for the rarest color in the room and declare a winner.
