Get ready
5 minutes. Find a shoebox or jar and pick an opening date, like one or five years from now.
What you’ll need
A box or jar, paper, pens, tape and small items that matter to your family right now.
Let’s play
1. Each of you writes a letter to your future self. Include your height, your favorite song and one goal.
2. Add a few small items, like a ticket, a drawing or a list of current prices.
3. Write five predictions about next year and add them.
4. Seal the box and write the opening date on the outside in big letters.
5. Put it somewhere safe and add the date to your calendar.
Your part in the adventure
Write your own letter and share one line from it if you want to.
What they’re discovering
They’re reflecting on who they are now and thinking about the future.
Before you begin
No safety concerns.
Keep the idea going
Ages 8 to 10 can draw instead of write. Ages 13 to 15 can write a sealed letter only they will open.
Every child is different. Adjust activities for their age and abilities, and stay close by. These are play ideas, not medical or developmental advice.
