Get ready

2 minutes. Clear a low table or floor area and set out paper and crayons.

What you’ll need

Paper and crayons. Optional: a large sheet of paper for the town map.

Let’s play

1. Fold a sheet in half so it stands like a tent. Draw a door and windows on one side.

2. Make a second building together. Ask what each place does for the town.

3. Draw paths on a large sheet, or arrange the buildings with clear spaces between them.

4. Pretend two fingers are visitors. Follow your child’s directions to a park, a library or an entirely invented place.

Your part in the adventure

Be the visiting neighbor who needs directions and has one funny request.

What they’re discovering

Planning a town together builds spatial thinking, the words for places and jobs, and the give and take of deciding what goes where.

Before you begin

Paper only, no staples or scissors needed. Keep the town off the path to the door, and pick up the paper afterward.

Keep the idea going

Ages 6 to 8 can add a map key and agree where everyone’s favorite building goes. Younger kids can decorate while you fold. If interest fades, a finger visitor arrives who’s lost and needs directions.

Every child is different. Adjust activities for their age and abilities, and stay close by. These are play ideas, not medical or developmental advice.
