Get ready

3 minutes. Put two closed books flat on the floor with a small gap between them.

What you’ll need

Paper, two similar closed books and a pair of clean rolled socks.

Let’s play

1. Lay one sheet of paper across the gap. Ask what might happen when a soft rolled sock rests on it.

2. Test gently, keeping hands away from the gap. Notice what the paper does.

3. Try folding a fresh sheet back and forth into a fan, then set it across the same gap.

4. Test with the same sock and compare. What changed? Try one new fold suggested by your child.

Your part in the adventure

Be the lab partner who makes predictions and is happy when a test does not work.

What they’re discovering

Changing one thing and testing again is how experiments work. They’re learning to predict, compare and stay curious when a test fails.

Before you begin

Books stay flat on the floor and off the walkway. Test only with soft rolled socks, never hands, coins or anything heavy, and nobody stands on the bridge.

Keep the idea going

Draw the two designs and let your kid explain which one they’d try next. Ages 6 to 8 can widen the gap and count how many socks each bridge holds. If interest drops, name the bridges and give the winner a ribbon.
