Get ready
5 minutes. Gather sofa cushions, a blanket and a stack of five or six picture books.
What you’ll need
Cushions or pillows, a blanket, a few books and a flashlight. Optional: paper and crayons for library cards.
Let’s play
1. Build the fort together. Cushions for walls, blanket for the roof, and a doorway big enough for a grown up.
2. Make a library card for each visitor. A scribble and a name is plenty.
3. Your kid is the librarian. Ask for a book about something silly, like a dinosaur who hates toast, and let them choose the closest match.
4. Read one book inside the fort by flashlight. Whisper, because it’s a library.
5. Stamp the library card with a crayon mark and return the book to its shelf.
Your part in the adventure
Be the slightly confused visitor who needs help finding the right book and follows the librarian’s rules.
What they’re discovering
They’re organizing, following and setting rules, and discovering that reading is a place you go, not just a thing you do.
Before you begin
Keep the blanket roof light so it can’t trap anyone, and leave a wide doorway. The flashlight stays pointed at pages, not eyes.
Keep the idea going
Younger kids can shelve books by color. Ages 6 to 8 can write a one line review for each book. If the fort gets quiet, the library closes and reopens as a secret clubhouse.
