Get ready

2 minutes. Check the cups for cracks and choose a comfortable, quiet space.

What you’ll need

Two large unbreakable plastic cups, a wooden spoon and a folded towel.

Let’s play

1. Tap a cup gently once with the spoon, then tap the towel. What sounds different?

2. Let your child choose two words to describe each sound, such as soft, hollow or short.

3. Make a simple pattern of two quiet sounds and invite your child to answer with the same pattern.

4. Trade the leader role. End with a few seconds of listening for ordinary sounds in the room.

Your part in the adventure

Be the studio partner who copies your child’s rhythm and keeps the volume comfortable.

What they’re discovering

Comparing sounds and copying patterns builds listening, description and memory.

Before you begin

Use big unbreakable cups with no loose parts. Tap gently, never near ears, and skip any sound that bothers them.

Keep the idea going

Use just fingers on the table and towel, or clap the pattern quietly together. Ages 6 to 8 can make a three or four sound pattern. If it goes flat, record a tiny song on your phone and play it back.
