Get ready
1 minute. Find a window with rain running down it and a comfortable spot to sit.
What you’ll need
A rainy window. Optional: paper and crayons for a scoreboard.
Let’s play
1. Each of you picks a raindrop near the top of the glass and gives it a name.
2. Say go and watch. Cheer for your drop as it slides, stalls and joins others.
3. Talk about what happened. Did the big drop win? Why did one stop?
4. Race again with a new rule, like the drop that joins the most friends wins.
5. Draw the winning drop’s face on your scoreboard.
Your part in the adventure
Be the overexcited sports announcer. Narrate every twist in the race.
What they’re discovering
They’re watching closely, making predictions, and noticing how water moves and gathers. It’s physics without anyone saying the word.
Before you begin
Watch from inside. Keep hands off the glass if it’s a large window your kid could lean on.
Keep the idea going
Younger kids can just point and cheer. Ages 6 to 8 can predict the winner and explain why afterward. If the rain stops, race two beads of water down a tilted baking sheet at the sink.
