Get ready
3 minutes. Clear the floor, keep enough room light to see and check the flashlight battery cover is secure.
What you’ll need
An adult-operated battery flashlight, a clear wall and paper. Optional: crayons.
Let’s play
1. An adult holds the flashlight toward an empty wall, away from faces. Make a simple hand shadow.
2. Invite your child to predict what happens as the hand moves nearer the light. Try it together.
3. Give the shadow a name and a small problem to solve. Add a second character using another hand.
4. Tell a short story with the shadows, then draw a favorite scene if you like.
Your part in the adventure
Operate the light and become a supporting character in your child’s story.
What they’re discovering
Watching a shadow grow as the hand moves closer teaches cause and effect. The story part builds language and teamwork.
Before you begin
You hold the flashlight, and never point it at eyes. No candles, hot lamps or lasers. Keep the room light enough to move around.
Keep the idea going
Let your kid direct the story out loud while you make both shadows. Ages 6 to 8 can cut paper puppets with you. If the story stalls, introduce a tiny shadow that wants to be giant.
