Get ready
1 minute. Pick a comfortable place and put one sock over each adult or child hand.
What you’ll need
Two clean adult-sized socks. Optional: paper and crayons.
Let’s play
1. Look through a safe window together and describe what you can see in the sky.
2. Introduce your weather puppet. Give a brief, silly forecast such as “a chance of flying pancakes.”
3. Invite your child’s puppet to explain what a family should wear or bring for the real weather.
4. Take turns reporting a pretend forecast and choosing one sensible thing to do today.
Your part in the adventure
Give your puppet a gentle, funny voice and follow your child’s ideas.
What they’re discovering
They’re mixing real observation with pretend, practicing description and turn taking, and working out what the weather means for the day.
Before you begin
Use plain socks with no buttons or loose threads, and keep them off faces. Watch the weather from inside if there’s a storm.
Keep the idea going
Let the puppet describe a feeling as weather: ‘I feel sunny because we’re playing together.’ Ages 6 to 8 can do a full forecast for tomorrow. If it stalls, give the puppet a rival forecaster who always gets it wrong.
Every child is different. Adjust activities for their age and abilities, and stay close by. These are play ideas, not medical or developmental advice.
