Play music, dance wild, then freeze into the strangest statue you can hold.

Get ready
1 minute. Clear a bit of floor and queue up a few songs on your phone.
What you’ll need
Music from a phone or speaker. Nothing else.
Let’s play
1. Play a song and dance however you like. The sillier the better.
2. Pause the music. Everyone freezes into a statue and holds it.
3. The adult becomes a museum visitor and walks around inspecting the statues. Try not to laugh. Statues that giggle are allowed to stay anyway.
4. Swap jobs. Your kid pauses the music and inspects your statue.
5. For the last round, call out a statue theme before pausing: a dinosaur, a superhero, a sleepy cat.
Your part in the adventure
Dance badly on purpose, inspect the statues with great seriousness, and lose the giggle contest.
What they’re discovering
They’re listening for cues, controlling their body on command, and practicing stillness, which is harder than it looks.
Before you begin
Move anything with corners out of the dance zone. Socks slide on hard floors, so bare feet or sneakers are better.
Keep the idea going
Younger kids can freeze into shapes you name. Ages 6 to 8 can give each statue a title and a price tag. If it’s winding down, end with the slowest statue in the world melting to the floor.
