Get ready

5 minutes. Clear a floor area and lay down a few long strips of painter’s tape as roads.

What you’ll need

Painter’s tape or masking tape, handled by the adult, plus toy cars, blocks or stuffed animals. Optional: paper and crayons for signs.

Let’s play

1. Lay down a main road together, then let your kid tell you where the side streets go.

2. Build the town along the roads. A block is a school, a shoebox is a fire station, a cushion is a mountain.

3. Give every resident a reason to travel. The bunny needs bread. The car is late for school.

4. Add one problem. A road is closed, a bridge is out. How does the town fix it?

5. Hold a town meeting at the end and decide what to build tomorrow.

Your part in the adventure

Be the road crew and the slightly lost delivery driver who needs directions from the mayor.

What they’re discovering

They’re planning space, telling stories with a map, and solving a problem that affects the whole town, not just one toy.

Before you begin

The adult handles the tape and uses the kind that peels off floors without marking. Keep roads away from doorways and stairs.

Keep the idea going

Younger kids can drive while you build. Ages 6 to 8 can draw and tape down street signs with real street names from your neighborhood. If play slows, a surprise visitor arrives in town with a secret.
