Make the visit your own
1. Island explorer. Give each part of the playground an expedition name and let your kid pick the next mission.
2. Sound safari. Try the musical play pieces and make up a rhythm that stands for your day.
3. Bridge guardian. On the paths, invent a story about who guards an imaginary bridge and what you have to do to cross it.
A flexible mini-itinerary
1. First 15 minutes. Park, find the restrooms and figure out the best way to Tom Sawyer’s Play Island.
2. Next 35 minutes. Free play on the playground, with breaks when they need them.
3. Around 50 minutes in. Go on a sound hunt along the paths. Stay on land and away from the lake.
4. Last 20 minutes. Water, a snack and a quick chat about the best part.
Admission and costs
It’s a park and playground trip. The county charges for parking on weekends and holidays. Watersports and organized activities are paid separately.
Getting there and parking
Parking is free Monday through Thursday and paid Friday through Sunday and on holidays. Check current rates and any event restrictions before you go.
Access and family facilities
Tom Sawyer’s Play Island is an inclusive fort-style playground with slides, balance beams, climbers and musical play. The county also lists parking, restrooms, water fountains, picnic shelters and lakes.
A bite to eat
Bring water and a small snack.
Don’t count on a concession being open.
Weather and an easier pace
It’s all outdoors. Bring shade, bug spray if you need it and plenty of water. Skip it during storms and the hottest part of the day.
Before you begin
There are several lakes. Watch the kids the whole time and stay away from the water’s edge and the watersports area. Stick to equipment that fits their age, and keep climbing to the play structures.
