7900 SW 40th Street, Miami, FL 33155
Make the visit your own
1. Pattern patrol. On a short walk, count curved lines, straight lines and shapes or colors that repeat.
2. Nature detective. Find three bird calls or plant shapes. Look and listen, no touching or collecting.
3. Park postcard. At a shady rest stop, ask what one thing they’d put on a postcard home. Draw it or just describe it.
A flexible mini-itinerary
1. First 15 minutes. Pick a short loop, find a playground and check where the restrooms are.
2. Next 20 minutes. Playground time, then a water break.
3. Around 35 minutes in. Walk a short paved trail and see who can spot the most patterns or hear the most sounds.
4. Last 20 minutes. Snack or picnic in the shade, then an easy walk back to the car.
Admission and costs
Entry to the park is usually free. Programs, events and the concession stand can cost extra, so check the posted fees.
Getting there and parking
There’s parking on site. It fills up and traffic gets heavier during games and festivals.
Access and family facilities
The county lists parking, a playground, restrooms, water fountains, a picnic shelter, a concession stand, walking and nature trails and plenty of sports fields. It’s a big park, so things are spread out.
A bite to eat
Bring water and a small snack.
The county lists a concession stand, but it isn’t always open.
Weather and an easier pace
There’s a lot of open ground and it gets hot. Check the weather and the events calendar, bring sunscreen, hats and water, and have a backup plan if storms roll in.
Before you begin
Keep the kids well away from the lakes, fishing spots, parking lanes and fields with games going on. Don’t approach wildlife, and head out if it gets too hot or a storm comes in.
